During the week of January 27, the École Internationale Gaston Thorn (EIGT) officially announced that it will expand its secondary education offerings starting in September 2025 with a new school campus in Walferdange.

Following inquiries from interested citizens, we reached out to the municipal council to obtain more details about this project.

The mayor provided us with the following information:

  • Initial Phase (from September 2025)

    • The EIGT will open in Walferdange with three classes and approximately 100 students.

    • The school will be located on the Walferdange Castle campus.

      • Initially, classes will take place in the facilities currently occupied by École Charlemagne.

        • These facilities will be renovated until September 2025.

  • Enrollment & Traffic Management📋🚦

    • Residents of Walferdange will have priority when enrolling.

      • This measure aims to limit traffic congestion within the municipality.

  • Sports Facilities:🏟️🏃‍♂️

    • Physical education classes will take place in the Walferdange sports hall.

      • The Ministry of Education already holds 55% of the usage rights for this facility, ensuring there will be no scheduling conflicts with the local primary school or sports clubs.

Long-Term Planning Until 2030

  • The Ministry of Education plans to expand the EIGT campus in Walferdange to eight classes and approximately 300 students by 2030.

Impacts on the Municipality

The expansion of the EIGT presents both opportunities and challenges:

Enrollment priority for Walferdange residents is a positive measure that will provide direct benefits to local families.

The presence of students and teachers could boost the local economy, particularly benefiting small businesses and restaurants in the community.

It remains to be seen how the school’s growth will impact traffic congestion and what measures the municipality will take in response.

📜🏛️ Another key concern is the historical preservation of Walferdange Castle and its surroundings.

Although the site falls entirely under the Ministry's jurisdiction, we expect municipal officials to take concrete measures to ensure the protection of this cultural heritage.

We will continue to monitor the development of this project and keep you informed.
